UJJAYI: THE VICTORIOUS BREATH
Astanga yoga continuously uses only one pranayma (breathing practice). This is ujjayi breath, meaning victorious breath. Ujjayi breath is practised throughout the entire sequence of Astanga yoga postures without a break. It consists of the narrowing of the air passages in your throat which enables precise control of the flow of air into and out of your body Astanga yoga postures are very challenging and ujjayi breathing can greatly enhance your ability to do them. it increases your lung capacity (which helps you to breathe fully, deeply and steadily even when you are not practicing yoga), it creates a feeling of heat in your body which enables your muscles to stretch without injury (if you do the same poses without ujjyi breath, your body doesn’t seem to become as hot or as supple). and it increases the detoxifying nature of the poses. Ujjyi breath also has mental benefits: the soft sounds are soothing and create a steady rhythm to accompany your practice. and they also give you the focus that you need to turn your concentration inward and reach a meditative state.
